I remember the day when Emily was born. It was a beatiful spring day in 1852, and the news had already gone around that her mother went into labor and would be having her in the evening.

It was in the winter of 1884, Miss Emily was about 32, and her father had died. I remember this because later that week I was the minister who officiated at the wake and of the funeral.

The next thing I remember was when Homer Barron came to town in the summer of 1885, and Emily fell in love with him.

It was about a year later in 1886 when Homer Barron passed, even though I do not recall a wake or funeral.

I will never forget he died that year because later on that month, I started smelling something repulsive around the house. I suspected it was from Miss Emily's bedroom, but the one room I was never allowed in to clean was her bedroom, I never got to check.

I remember in the fall of 1894, Colonel Sartoris remitted Miss Emily's taxes, even though I did not agree with this decision.

I am not sure why I remember this exact date, but I do remember that on the 5th of April in 1901, Miss Emily resigned from her china painting lessons.

In July of 1906, Colonel Sartoris passed. I remember this because Miss Emily was so thankful to him for remitting her taxes, I did not have the heart to tell her the news of his death because I knew she would be devastated.

In the spring of 1916, the Board of Aldermen went to Miss Emily's house and tried to get her to pay her taxes. She just kept telling them she had no taxes to pay, and to check the city records or check with Colonel Sartoris. They distinctly told me that she did not seem to understand that he was dead. They also mentioned that the smell of her house was putrid.

Finally, in the summer of 1926, Emily died. One thing I remember is all of the men in the town having a sense of respect for her, and all of the women in town eager to see the inside of her house. When they found out hat made the house smell all the people in the town were horrified because of Homer Barron's body found in her bed.
